Explanation of Position Before the Amendment Vote for the Protection of Global Climate for Present and Future Generations of Humankind Resolution

Thank you, Madame Chair.
The United States offers this amendment to safeguard a critical innovation of the 2030 Agenda: that the three dimensions of sustainable development must be addressed holistically and in a comprehensive way—in a “balanced and integrated manner.” The language currently in OP10 does not appropriately capture this key insight and deflects away from a key idea of the Sustainable Development Goals. The language in OP10 provides an alternative set of principles that do not enjoy consensus. The amendment we have put forward draws language directly from paragraph 2 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Declaration to address this concern and facilitate a fully consensus text this year. We urge Member States to vote “yes” on this amendment.
