AS DELIVERED
The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to affirm the importance of families in all their diversity, including through multilateral fora. We have concerns that this resolution promotes narrow visions of the family that impede gender equality and exclude LGBTQI persons. The United States advocated to add previously agreed language stating that various forms of families exist everywhere in the world. This statement of fact is essential for the resolution, as the UN must be able to recognize reality that there are different family structures in various places including intergenerational family households, grandparents raising grandchildren, single parent families, and families headed by same-sex households. It is essential that the UN recognize these various forms of the family as we further address human rights and the family throughout UN fora. We look forward to strengthening the text together next year.
