We thank the G-77 for its resolution on “Follow-Up to the Twentieth Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and Beyond.” The United States is pleased to join consensus on the resolution.
The United States strongly supports the irreplaceable primacy of parents and the families they create, which is the foundational institution of society, vital to the health of a nation and human flourishing. As President Trump aptly stated: “The family is our foundation, a pillar of our past, and a key to our future prosperity.”
Strengthening the capacities of children and their families is one of the best investments a society can make to eliminate extreme poverty, boost economic growth, and promote peace. When the family unit is strong, all other goals and outcomes for children are well within reach.
The United States reads the references to violent disciplinary measures to mean punishment that rises to the level of child abuse, in line with domestic law.
With regard to this resolution’s references to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, education, and health-care services, we addressed our concerns in a statement that we delivered earlier this afternoon.
