Media Advisory: United States and Ireland to Host Side Event During Protection of Civilians Week on Humanitarian Carveouts for UN Sanctions Regimes
The United States and Ireland will hold a side event on Wednesday, May 24 on “Humanitarian Carveouts for UN Sanctions Regimes: The Impact and Implementation of Resolution 2664.” The event, which takes place during UN Protection of Civilians Week, will bring together UN Member States, humanitarian organizations, and civil society for a discussion on the implications of UN Security Council Resolution 2664 and the practical steps that need to be taken to ensure its full and effective implementation.
Resolution 2664, put forward by the United States and Ireland, was adopted by the Security Council in December and establishes a humanitarian carveout across all UN sanctions regimes. It has been described as ‘a milestone’ and ‘a watershed moment’ for the Council.
“In passing UN Security Council Resolution 2664, we heeded the call of our humanitarian partners, who have been advocating for a safe pathway through UN sanctions regimes for over a decade,” said Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations. “At a time when global humanitarian needs are at their highest, we were proud to alleviate what our partners saw as an obstacle to their work.”
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Ambassador Fergal Mythen, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, will deliver opening remarks, followed by a panel discussion featuring Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Joyce Msuya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Dominic MacSorley, Global Ambassador for Concern Worldwide.
The event will begin at 8:15 a.m. in UNHQ Conference Room 6 and streamed on UN Web TV. Media interested in covering the event in person should RSVP to USUN-PressInquiry@state.gov. Additional logistical details will be provided upon RSVP.
