Media Note: Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to Visit Ecuador,Lead U.S. Delegation to Costa Rica for the Second Summit for Democracy
In Costa Rica at the Summit for Democracy, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will deliver a keynote address on strengthening democracy around the world and increasing youth participation in the democratic process.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, will travel to Ecuador and Costa Rica March 29-31. During her trip, she will speak to the importance of multilateralism in achieving regional peace and security goals. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will also advance shared priorities of strengthening democratic institutions, increasing youth participation in democratic processes, and meeting the humanitarian and protection needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
On March 29, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will meet with senior Ecuadorian government officials and participate in a public conversation with Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguin on shared U.S. and Ecuadorian multilateral priorities, including Ecuador’s 2023-2024 term as an elected member of the UN Security Council. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will also meet UN agencies and NGOs supporting refugee resettlement in Ecuador, which hosts more than half a million refugees and migrants. She will also engage with civil society, including Afro-Ecuadorian youth.
On March 30, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will lead the U.S. delegation to Costa Rica for the 2023 Summit for Democracy, where she will attend Summit events hosted by the President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves Robles. At the Summit, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will deliver a livestreamed keynote address on strengthening democracy around the world and increasing youth participation in the democratic process. She will also engage with youth activists and leaders focused on building a safer and fairer world grounded in democratic values.
While in Costa Rica, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will meet with Costa Rican government officials, including President Chaves, members of civil society, and with Nicaraguans who have fled the repressive Ortega-Murillo regime. Costa Rica has been a welcoming host to large numbers of migrants and refugees from across the region.
