Media Note: United States to Co-host United Nations Online Symposium on the Issue of Abductions by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

The United States, with Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the European Union, will co-host a United Nations online symposium addressing the issue of abductions by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday, June 29, from 8:00-9:45 a.m. EDT. We thank Japan for its leadership in organizing this event and bringing us together as co-hosts.

Remarks will be delivered by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, representatives from the co-hosts, and family members of abduction victims.

The United States strongly supports Japan, the Republic of Korea, and all countries whose citizens have been abducted by the DPRK. We empathize deeply with the victims’ relatives, who suffer greatly from not knowing the fate of their loved ones. We will continue to work with our partners and allies to address these grave injustices and to raise awareness of the DPRK’s human rights violations and abuses, and we call on the UN Security Council to remain seized on this issue.

The symposium will be broadcast here. The full schedule of events and speakers list is available here.
