Press Release: Ambassador Haley on the Release of a UN Report Detailing Human Rights Abuses in Nicaragua

August 29, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, the UN released a report detailing widespread human rights violations and abuses by the Nicaraguan government and its affiliated groups against its own people. The report comes four months after President Ortega began repressing and targeting Nicaraguan people who engaged in peaceful protest against his regime, including violence against Catholic Church clergy and facilities. The report includes accounts of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, torture, sexual violence in detention centers, and closed trials, among other abuses.

“This report highlights what we have been saying for months: Ortega is terrorizing his own people. The Nicaraguan government must stop its campaign of violence and intimidation. Until the Nicaraguan people are able to use their voices freely and peacefully, the international community must continue to pressure the regime. Failure to do so will lead to another Venezuela and undermine the security of the entire region,” said Ambassador Haley.
