Press Release: Ambassador Nikki Haley Calls for Investigation into Atrocities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

June 5, 2017

The United States has called for the United Nations to investigate the deaths of UN employees and human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“After the tragic deaths of Michael Sharp and Zaida Catalan, they and their families deserve justice. We owe it to their legacy to end the human rights abuses being carried out by armed groups and the DRC government against the Congolese people. We hope other nations will join us in supporting a UN-led investigation and Human Rights Council-led inquiry into these horrific acts,” said Ambassador Haley.

The U.S. has called for the Secretary-General to initiate a special investigation into the murder of UN officers Michael Sharp of the U.S. and Zaida Catalan of Sweden. As a member of the HRC, the U.S. will support a resolution to establish a Commission of Inquiry into the ongoing human rights violations in the Kasai regions of the DRC.
