UNITED STATES MISSION TO THE UNITED NATIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 20, 2019

During my meeting today with Jovenel Moise, Haiti’s democratically elected president, he made clear his commitment to addressing Haiti’s urgent needs, promoting economic prosperity, and building a better future for all Haitians. My engagement with other political and economic stakeholders reinforced the urgent need to support Haiti’s state institutions.

A fully functioning government must:

• Fight corruption;
• Investigate and prosecute human rights abusers, including those responsible for the La Saline and Bel Air killings; and
• Combat narcotics and human trafficking.

President Moise and other democratically elected leaders have an obligation to come together, put aside differences, and find an inclusive solution for the benefit of the people of Haiti. The United States stands ready to support, and I leave Haiti with the expectation that they will rise to the challenge.
