Ambassador Nikki Haley, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, met with Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Archbishop Bernardito Auza today in New York. Ambassador Haley thanked Archbishop Auza for the Catholic Church’s leadership in supporting human rights, democratic governance, and religious freedom in all regions of the world. They discussed Venezuela’s deteriorating humanitarian situation and the need to pressure the country’s leaders to support their people. On the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, Ambassador Haley and Archbishop Auza called for a reduction in violence and inclusive, constructive political processes in both countries. They also discussed the situation in Burma, noting the Burmese government must allow access and facilitate the peaceful return of all refugees. Finally, Archbishop Auza thanked the United States for being so vocal on the issue of protecting Christians and other minorities in the Middle East.
