Readout of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Meeting Ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations
The below is attributable to U.S. Mission to the United Nations Spokesperson Nate Evans:
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met today with Ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations. The two officials discussed areas of shared concern, including the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s ongoing provocations in the region and human rights violations, as well as Russia’s illegal reinvasion into Ukraine and UN Security Council reform.
They expressed their shared desire for the UN Security Council to convene urgently to address the DPRK’s March 15 intercontinental ballistic missile launch. The Ambassador reiterated that this launch – like the many before it – needlessly raises tensions and risks destabilizing the security situation in the region. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield noted that this launch demonstrates that the DPRK continues to prioritize its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs over the well-being of its people.
To that end, the Ambassador thanked Ambassador Ishikane for Japan’s co-sponsorship of the March 17 Arria-formula meeting, which is intended to address the DPRK’s ongoing human rights violations and abuses, and how they are inextricably linked to the maintenance of international peace and security.
