Readout of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Meeting with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, met yesterday with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf on the margins of the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield congratulated Foreign Minister Attaf on Algeria’s election to the UN Security Council and emphasized the United States’ readiness to partner closely with Algeria once it joins the Council in 2024. The Ambassador and the Foreign Minister reviewed shared efforts to advance regional stability in the Sahel, including Mali. The Ambassador also expressed appreciation for Algeria’s efforts to encourage a return to constitutional order and democratic rule. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Foreign Minister Attaf committed to coordinate closely on these and other issues of mutual concern in the months to come.
