Readout of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Meetings with Turkish Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met today with Turkish Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the value the United States places on its strategic partnership with Turkey, our NATO ally. She and Spokesperson Kalin discussed the ongoing conflict in Syria and related humanitarian and security issues throughout the region. The officials discussed the importance of the UN Security Council reauthorizing and expanding UN cross-border humanitarian access, which delivers life-saving assistance to the Syrian people. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield discussed shared interests between Turkey and the United States, including addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, economic prosperity, energy security, and finding durable solutions to regional conflicts. She also raised areas of concern to the United States, including limits on civil society and dissent in Turkey.
