AS DELIVERED

Thank you, Mr. Andrews, for your attention to the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

What short, medium, and long-term steps must be taken to improve the human rights situation in Myanmar, in light of the upcoming election and escalating violence in Rakhine State?

We call for unhindered access to life-saving humanitarian assistance in all areas affected by violence across the country. The COVID-19 pandemic increases communities’ vulnerability and the urgency of reducing violence. We call for the Government of Myanmar to create conditions that allow for the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homes or other places of their choosing.

We are closely watching preparations for November national elections. Candidates and voters must be free to participate without harassment or intimidation.
