AS DELIVERED
Thank you Chair. The United States strongly supports the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. We deeply appreciate the need to combat systemic racism in our own country and around the world.
The meaningful participation of people of African descent is critical to effective and representative policymaking, implementation, and evaluation to combat systemic racism.
Systemic racism and discrimination continue to persist in every society as a result of the lingering legacies of the horrific Trans-Atlantic slave trade. We share the Working Group’s concern regarding the negative impacts systemic racism has had on people of African descent in all aspects of life and concerns regarding the slow progress made to address these issues.
Racial equity and justice continue to be a top priority for the United States. To this end, President Biden launched the first ever President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States to advance equity for the African Diaspora in the United States and around the world.
Our question is, what additional collaborative efforts could Member States take to build inclusive and secure participation in public affairs of people of African descent?
Thank you.
