Thank you, Mr. President, Mr. Secretary-General, and members of the General Assembly.

Today is a wonderful day. We have the chance to congratulate our new president, President Lajčák, and we also have the opportunity to thank President Thomson for his great work that he’s done over the past year in bringing peace and security around the world.

The United States wants to be as engaged as possible in the United Nations, but we want to do it in a way that we make sure that we’re bringing efficiency, effectiveness, and reliability on what the United Nations does. We feel like this is a time that there are a lot of challenges in the world, but there’s also many opportunities.

If we band together, if we work together, we can rid the world of the terrible, cowardly acts like we saw in Kabul on our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. We can make sure that we deal with the migration and the refugees so that they can live with dignity. We can focus on human rights and making sure that we’re treating all people as if they’re God’s children. We can also make sure that we’re focused on how we’re going to continue to transition as we go through these challenges into making them great opportunities. We can rid the sexual exploitation that we’re seeing in peacekeeping missions. We can make those peacekeeping missions smarter instead of working harder.

All of these things we know we can do, but we need to do them together. And we certainly look forward to President Lajčák’s leadership. I want you to know that the United States will stand with you as a partner to support you in every possible way we can. The 72nd Session of the General Assembly is going to be an important one. It’s going to be one that has many actions, but we know that if we stand together, it is going to be a very successful one.

Thank you very much.
