AS DELIVERED

Thank you to the Chairs and to the President of ECOSOC, as well, for convening us and to the briefers for their presentations.

The United States believes peacebuilding is a key enabler of just and inclusive societies, which contributes towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16, and is also foundational for achieving all of the Goals. We support a UN that is focused on fully implementing the 2030 Agenda and creating inclusive economic opportunity between nations and within nations.

As reflected in the U.S. National Security Strategy, the United States remains committed to achieving the SDGs as a vital part of our commitment to seek a free, open, prosperous, and secure world. Year after year, more than 20 U.S. government agencies partner globally to advance all 17 SDGs and promote peace and prosperity for all. And, we also support calls for more adequate, predictable, and sustainable financing for peacebuilding through assessed contributions.

We recognize that delivering on the 2030 Agenda requires Member States to follow through on their development and climate finance commitments. The United States will do more to meet those pledges, and we’ll encourage other donor countries to meet theirs. We are pleased to see so much common ground on the future of sustainable development through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. SDGs are about expanding economic opportunity, social justice, caring for our planet, good governance, and ensuring no one is left behind.

Our success, however, hinges on this last point: ensuring that peace and development progress is inclusive. As the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes, development must be advanced alongside the other equal and interlinked pillars of the UN Charter – peace and security and human rights, as well as rule of law.

These principles of human rights and rule of law must also guide our peacebuilding and development work to ensure it is more sustainable, more connected on the ground, and more supportive of the achievement of the SDGs. Thank you.
