Remarks Following the Failure of a UN Security Council Resolution on Nord Stream Proposed by Russia in Response to Russia

Ambassador Robert Wood
Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs
New York, New York
March 27, 2023

Thank you, Mr. President. My apologies for taking the floor, but I need to respond to points that were made by the Representative of the Russian Federation.

As was mentioned here, since the attacks took place, Russia has blamed the United States for carrying out these attacks – saying that we are responsible for carrying them out. With those comments, it was very clear that Russia was not interested in an impartial investigation – it had already decided who the guilty culprit was. Russia was simply playing politics.

The three countries that have launched investigations are concerned about what is happening to infrastructure around the world. We need to let those investigations play out.

I think it’s a positive sign that Russia is showing concern about the threat to critical infrastructure – particularly to this piece of critical infrastructure. My hope is that they would show the same concern about Ukraine’s infrastructure and what’s being rained upon it.

Thank you, Mr. President.
