Statement by Ambassador Haley on New U.S. Sanctions on Burmese Military Personnel Involved in Atrocities

August 17, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The new sanctions announced today by the U.S. Treasury Department make it clear that the United States is prepared to hold those responsible for atrocities in Burma accountable for their actions. The security forces who have been designated have taken part in some of the most horrific forms of human rights abuses, including ethnic cleansing. We will continue to shine a light on these atrocities and take action against the perpetrators. All communities in Burma deserve to live in peace without the fear of further violence and abuses.

Separately, we continue to call for the release of Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. Respect for all fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press, is critical for Burma’s democracy to succeed.
