Statement by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Kwibuka 27
On this somber anniversary, we reflect on the more than 800,000 people murdered during 100 days of terror in Rwanda in 1994. Today we grieve for the innocent lives lost and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the families who will forever cherish them and the survivors who suffer as both victims and witnesses to one of the darkest chapters in human history.
We take this opportunity to remember our common humanity and recommit to protecting the vulnerable, ensuring accountability for atrocities, and upholding inherent human dignity. Let us renew our commitment to ensuring mass atrocities like this never occur again.
