Statement by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the 30th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, a momentous achievement. Since Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union 30 years ago, millions of Ukrainians have enjoyed the fruits of freedom, made their country proud, and pushed their nation forward.
Today, we reaffirm that the United States stands with Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression and disinformation campaigns. We stand with the people of Ukraine as they combat corruption and strengthen their commitment to democracy and human rights.
Seven years ago, the UN General Assembly adopted by overwhelming majority a resolution on the “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine.” Through this resolution and others after, the international community has loudly and clearly affirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Nothing can change the fact that Crimea is part of Ukraine.
The United States supports Ukraine’s initiative to establish an international Crimea Platform to focus diplomatic efforts on ending Russia’s occupation and restoring the peninsula to Ukraine. We also look forward to welcoming President Zelenskyy to the United States. His meeting with President Biden will further cement the close relationship between our countries and demonstrate our enduring partnership.
I send my congratulations to the people of Ukraine on this joyous day. The United States stands with you as you celebrate your independence.
