Statement by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the International Court of Justice Election
I would like to congratulate Professor Sarah H. Cleveland on her election today to the International Court of Justice for the 2024-2033 term.
Over the course of her career, Professor Cleveland has worked to advance international law without ever losing sight of the people behind it. She carried this approach throughout her campaign as she travelled around the world listening to different perspectives on the work of the Court. Her deep respect for and knowledge of the world’s diverse legal systems, as well as her compassion and humanity, will equip her to make important contributions during her term as a judge.
The election of an eminently qualified female candidate like Professor Cleveland to the Court is also an important step in addressing its longstanding gender imbalance. I would also like to congratulate the other elected judges and I look forward to seeing them serve with distinction and upholding the Court’s critical role in the peaceful settlement of disputes and as a guardian of international law.
