Statement by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the Reappointment of Secretary-General António Guterres
On behalf of the United States, I am pleased to congratulate António Guterres on his reappointment as UN Secretary-General. The UN Security Council’s decision to recommend, and the UN General Assembly’s decision to make this appointment, is a testament to the Secretary-General’s leadership in addressing the world’s growing challenges.
The United Nations is confronted with historic challenges, including a global pandemic, the effects of the climate crisis, mass hunger and migration, human rights abuses, and humanitarian crises. Secretary-General Guterres has demonstrated a commitment to advancing our collective action to address these challenges, as well as the mission of the United Nations.
The United States recognizes the many challenges the Secretary-General will face in the coming years, and we hope that through his continued leadership, the next five years will see more peace, more security, and more prosperity than the last. To achieve these shared goals, it will require hard work, political will, and accountability from all UN Member States. It will also require all UN Member States to have an impassioned commitment to and a respect for the human rights of every individual, everywhere in the world – particularly the most vulnerable. This is the charge of the United Nations.
