The United States joins the Joint Statement of Shared Commitments to Advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda
The below is attributable to U.S. Mission to the United Nations Spokesperson Nate Evans:
The United States has joined the Statement of Shared Commitments that seek to prioritize and advance the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
It has been proven time and time again that women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation in peace processes as leaders, negotiators, peacekeepers, members of security forces, and peacebuilders increases the chances of a just and lasting peace for all.
Since UN Security Council Resolution 1325’s passage at the start of the 21st century, the UN Security Council has adopted 10 standalone WPS resolutions. But while these efforts are commendable, we need to focus on how to most effectively implement the WPS agenda.
The United States notes that the Statement does not change the current state of conventional or customary international law and does not create or elaborate new rights or legal obligations.
The United States is proud to be the first country with a comprehensive law on Women, Peace and Security.
