UN Security Council Press Elements Following Consultations on Myanmar and Somalia
The members of the Security Council were briefed by Special Representative to the Secretary-General, James Swan, on the situation in Somalia.
The members of the Security Council noted ongoing efforts to find agreement between leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal Member States on implementation of the 17 September electoral model.
They expressed concern over the ongoing impasse and called for Somalia’s leaders to engage in a constructive dialogue at the earliest opportunity without precondition to resolve outstanding issues on the legitimate basis of the 17 September agreement and the recommendations of the 16 February Baidoa Technical Committee. They emphasized that it remained in the best interests of all Somalis to ensure that inclusive elections took place as soon as possible.
They continued to commend the role of the African Union in promoting dialogue between Somalia’s parties and recalled the importance of finalizing the endorsement of the Somalia Transition Plan.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of terrorist attacks by Al Shabaab and reaffirmed their support for the national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of Somalia.
