United States, Albania, Ecuador, France, Japan, Malta, and the United Kingdom Call for UN Security Council Meeting on the August 23 Attempted Satellite Launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

The United States, Albania, Ecuador, France, Japan, Malta, and the United Kingdom have called for a UN Security Council meeting on the August 23 attempted satellite launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for tomorrow, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. EDT. The meeting will be broadcast live via UN WebTV: https://media.un.org/en/webtv.

This attempted satellite launch and all DPRK launches that use ballistic missile technology are violations of multiple Security Council resolutions; they raise tensions in Northeast Asia and beyond; and they are intended to refine and further develop the DPRK’s unlawful weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs. The Security Council must denounce the DPRK’s ongoing reckless behavior, and all UN Member States must fully implement all relevant Security Council resolutions to curb the DPRK’s generation of revenue for its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs.
