United States Announces $50 Million in Additional Assistance to Moldova in the Context of Russia’s War Against Ukraine
Today in Chisinau, Moldova, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced that, working with Congress, the United States will provide an additional $50 million to help the Government of Moldova and its people cope with the impacts of Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war on Ukraine. Through this additional assistance, the United States is supporting key lines of effort of the Moldova Support Conference, taking place April 5 in Berlin, to advance international support for Moldova’s resilience and reform agenda.
“Today, I was able to see firsthand the way your government and the Moldovan people have come together to embrace Ukrainian refugees – most of them women and children — who have been forced to leave behind everything they have and people they love to flee to safety,” said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield at a joint press conference with Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita today in Chisinau. “You have welcomed them with open arms. And for this, your hospitality and generosity are now known around the world. I want you to know that, in all your efforts, you have a committed partner in the United States. We know that this assistance will go far in your hands.”
The additional funding announced today will support programs, training, and equipment for border management; efforts to counter human trafficking with a focus on refugees as potential victims of trafficking; and assistance to improve accountability and transparency in the justice sector, and combat corruption and cybercrime. The United States will also bolster resources for programs that advance the Moldova Support Group Line of effort on energy.
Since February 24, the United States has provided more than $178 million inside Ukraine and more than $123 million for humanitarian efforts to complement the work of neighboring countries and the European Union to receive and host millions of refugees in the region, including more than $30 million in Moldova.
